Ebony Queen Sugar Cover

If Queen Sugar were a silent drama, we'd still be captivated by the sheer beauty of its stars and the cinematography that brings the characters to life. But while good looks may be the initial draw, it's the complexities of the characters that makes us stay. And in a beautifully shot feature story for the July/August issue of Ebony magazine, the show's leads talk about the depth of each of their characters. “Charley’s strength is a little superheroic,” Dawn-Lyen Gardner said of the middle Bordelon sibling whom she plays. “She is really one of the most resilient characters I [believe] I’ve ever played.” Echoing the iconic sentiment expressed by Gardner, Rutina Wesley added, “That’s the thing I love about Nova; there hasn’t been a character quite like her. I love that she’s really pretty unusual, and I think she’s flawed and very human. I love that I never quite know where she’s going. And I also love that anything is possible with Nova.” As for Kofi Siriboe, he sees his character Ralph Angel as an amalgamation of many different men. “I pull from my experiences as a Black man in America and all my brothers,” he told the mag. “I see Ralph Angel in everybody.” You can see a little more of these actors in their Ebony spread which hits newsstands this month on the next few pages. Tune in to Queen Sugar on OWN tonight at 10 pm.
